Nuggets of Nonsense
by Bill and Donna Chappell; 121 pages La Luz Publishing 1998. This little book of nonsense, titled aptly Nuggets of Nonsense, is the product of Bill Chappell's years of storytelling. It is a mixture of short anecdotes, one- liners and quips which reflect the humor in Chappell's outlook on life. Included among the short stories are several famous names: The "real" stories of Robin Hood, |
Hopalong Cassidy, Tom Sawyer and Little Red Riding Hood, among others. Chuckles are provided by the one- liners and what I call "quips," which are misuses or perversions of definitions, or, to put it simply, looking at words in a different light than the norm.
What do you call a woman who knits socks and pops wisecracks at the same time? A knitwit. Nightcrawler -- A man who had so much fun at |
the party he was unable to walk home.
A person who campaigns against false advertisement is called a bullfighter.
The type of humor is reminiscent of Minnie Pearl: it's country, a little corny and never objectionable. Chappell makes fun of everybody without picking on any one group of people or things.

songs. Nonsense is his first book. "This book has one purpose," he writes in the preface, " -- to make folks laugh." The first outburst will be when you turn the page. If you need a quick pick- me-up or a gift for a down-in-the- dumps friend, Nuggets of Nonsense is a good choice.
Nuggets of Nonsense is available through the publisher at (www.laughlaugh.com). |
