John's Vision

Author: Donna Word Chappell
All power I witnessed on Patmos that day,
Caught up in the Spirit, into Heaven conveyed.
Authority spoke like al great trumpet’s blast,
“I am Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last.”
I turned then and looked, and with awe beheld one
Whose countenance shone as the bright noonday sun.
His eyes were like fire, and so great was my dread
I collapsed at His feet and fell as though dead.
Then Tenderness touched me; it was His strong right hand.
He said “Fear not. I am he who died and lives again!”
Then I knew my beloved, the suffering Lamb,
The meek one who walked through old Jerusalem.

Power of Prayer

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Paul and Silas prayed and then
The chains fell off their hands.
Elijah prayed, and for three years
No rain fell in the land.
Daniel prayed and sweetly slept
In the lion’s den that night.
Hezekiah prayed and soon God put
His enemies to flight.
These were men of faith who prayed;
God heard their humble prayer.
If you will pray in faith and believe,
God will meet you there.

Taste and See

Author: Donna Word Chappell
If the good things in life by a person are sought,
He’ll discover someday that they cannot be bought.

It is in the Lord that these good things are found,
For all gifts good and perfect in Him abound.

There are millions who hunger for milk and bread,
But more by far long to be spiritually fed.

Have you tasted the food that no money can buy?
Have you drunk from the well that will never run dry?

If you truly are seeking a thing more fulfilling,
You should turn to the One who to save you is willing.

And like the woman at the well you will find
The strength and will to leave your old life behind.

For through the lessons that Jesus taught her,
She found the True Bread, and the Living Water.

So if everything on this earth you have tried
And by none of these thing have been satisfied,

You can taste and see that the Lord is good,
and by Him you’ll be fed a more wonderful food.

The best things that life has to offer are free,
So come to the Fountain — taste, and see.

Winds of Life

Author: Donna Word Chappell
The wind blew and raged against the great tree,
But its roots were buried deep.
Then it blew like a gale on a well-built ship,
Yet it thrived through windswept sea.
It blew against a sapling.
The sapling swayed to and fro.
It carried a seed to a place far away,
And it soon began to grow.
Do you sail through troubled waters
In the midst of a storm-tossed sea?
Learn to roll with the tide, to lean into the wind.
And soon you’ll be strong like the tree.

The Sweetest Thing

Author: Donna Word Chappell
The sweetest thing on earth
Is not that child upon your knee,

Nor yet the loved one who each day
Walks side by side with thee.

It’s not the morning sunrise,
Nor the rose bedecked with dew,

The breeze that brings the
Honeysuckle’s fragrance unto you.

The sweetest thing’s God’s love
for that small bundle on your knee,

To learn how, when life’s tempest comes,
He’ll calm the troubled sea.

So let Him walk upon the troubled
Waters of your mind.

Give Him your heart, and very soon,
Life’s sweetest thing you’ll find.

Heart Cry

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Search me, Lord, come search my heart.
Come shine Thy light in every part.

Know me, Lord, then let me know
Myself that I may start to grow

Into the image of Thy Son,
Thy Lovely, Blessed, Holy One.

Purge me, Lord, that I may be
A vessel fit for use by Thee.

Send Thy refining fires today
To cleanse this vessel made of clay.

Unveil my eyes, Lord, let me see
The One who shed His blood for me.

Paradise Undeserved

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Do I indeed see Christ my love
amidst the blood-washed throng?
And with the saints of ages past
lift up my voice in song?
Oh mercy without measure,
how could God bring such as I
Right through the gates of heaven
when my only merit was to cry
Unto the Savior, "Mercy, Lord,
I come to Thee undone.
The merits that I bring to thee,
not one, Lord, no, not one."
And yet I sing with rapture
God's new song among the blessed;
And yet I walk in white, clothed with
the Savior's righteousness.
And so I'll tell the story
throughout all eternity.
With joy I will proclaim to all,
Thy love saved even me.

He Touched Me

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Why should I live for Thee, oh Lord,
Why should I live for Thee?
When all Thou did was in my place
Hang naked on the tree?

Why should I flee from sin, oh Lord,
And what is it to me
That Thy blood fell in torrents
There on Mount Gethsemane?

These were my thoughts as day by day
I walked beside the sea,
Until one day those nail-pierced hands
Reached out in love to me.

“I did it all for thee, dear one,”
He said, most tenderly.
“I loved thee so that in thy place
I suffered agony.”

And then I saw how blind I’d been
to His great love for me,
And cried out with a broken heart,
“Oh, Master, now I see!!

"Forgive my sin, oh Sinless One!”
I cried most tearfully,
And He forgave my sin that day
And gave new life to me.

Consolation

Author: Donna Word Chappell
My eyes are on Thee, Lord, my eyes are on Thee.
However Thou planned it, that’s how it must be.

And I know if I trust Thee through this present trial
And patiently wait, that I’ll again smile.

For whatever befalls us, Lord, Thou hast a reason
And if we just wait, we’ll understand in due season.

But for now Thou hast promised in words plain and fair
That we’ll not have more than we’re able to bear.

How precious it is to be able to lean
On Thy arm of strength, and when things unforseen

Make their unscheduled entrance, unplanned and unwanted,
We’re told to be patient, longsuffering, undaunted.

For we’ve not a God that was made with man’s hands,
But our Lord sympathizes, and He understands.

“Cast on Me all your cares,” says our Lord, plain and clear,
“And I’ll give you rest from your doubts and your fears.”

With boundless compassion He bids us to enter
Into the comfort prepared for poor sinners.

And so I’ve determined to hear Thy entreaty,
To grasp Thy dear promise of help for the needy.

For I’ve known Thy comfort through trials before,
And I trust through this crisis, Thou will help me once more.

Dawn of Creation

Author: Donna Word Chappell
The Spirit hovered, brooded, moved
upon the troubled sea.
“Such darkness, such confusion,
such a formless mass!” said He.

He brooded thus--who knows how long?
And then the sweetest sound --
The Father’s voice in golden tones
of love cascading down.

“Let there be light!” He said,
and oh what glory shining through!
With great delight the Spirit moved,
The Father’s will to do.

And so light was. How good it was.
Perfection to admire.
And God Himself approved the beauty
of the earth’s attire.

Bird of Paradise

Author: Donna Word Chappell
One day as I was walking
On the straight and narrow highway
I looked, and not too far ahead
I saw a tempting byway.
I saw that games were being played,
Looked like a county fair.
So I went in to join them,
And they offered me a chair.
I watched awhile, and then began
To walk upon the byway.
It seemed a place quite similar
To the narrow highway.
I saw the birds, the shrubs and trees,
And smelled a smell so sweet.
But as I walked, I failed to see
The net beneath my feet.
I heard a crackling sound, and I
Was caught so suddenly,
That I could not begin to guess
What happened then to me.
I struggled from inside the net,
And suddenly the scene
Was changed, and I began to hear
A groaning, and some screams.
The birds became dark, ghastly things;
The trees were black and bent.
The smell became a dreadful stench;
The path had a sharp descent.
I cried out in that dreadful place,
Then heard the Master say
In loving tones, so sweet and low,
"Did you leave the narrow way?"
"Oh Lord," I cried, "I'm like a bird
Caught in this awful net.
Please help me, Lord, to free myself."
The Master said, "Don't fret.
"I'll give you strength, my little one,
To break the fowler's snare."
I struggled hard, and soon was free
In answer to my prayer.
Then when my wandering soul escaped
from that old fiend's device
The Master said, "That snare can't hold
A Bird of Paradise."

Gentle Hands
Author: Donna Word Chappell
One day as I lay on the brink of despair,
I fell on my knees, and I sought God in prayer.
He touched me that day, with hands gentle and kind.
He gave to me comfort, relief, peace of mind.
Many times since that day I've sought help from above,
And each time I've learned more of His comfort and love,
But my most precious memory is how, that first day,
Gentle hands from on high took my burdens away.

Springs in the Desert
Author: Donna Word Chappell
I looked upon the parched, dry land as far as eye could see;
A desert place, a wilderness, without a brook or tree.
And as I looked, and searched in vain for beauty to receive,
I felt I saw a mirror of my soul that fateful eve.
I cried to God, and said, "Oh, Lord -- the place I walk is dry.
Where are the Living Waters that You in Your Word describe?"
Then as I wandered on I thought I smelled a sweet perfume.
The Master's voice said, "Look, my child, look at the desert blooms!"
The fragrance wafted sweetly o'er my soul as I knelt there.
I glorified His handiwork and said a grateful prayer.
And then I knew as days went by, through sorrow, grief or woe,
This memory would again refresh and satisfy my soul.

The Quiet Place
Author: Donna Word Chappell
How lovely it is in the forest;
The wind softly blows through the leaves,
And it whispers to me, "This is God's land;
And here there are none that deceive.

"Here you'll find quiet and beauty,
A squirrel quickly scampering by,
How clearly God's wisdom is shown here,
You may see if you'll open your eyes.

"The babbling brook sings a new song;
The wind blows in sweet harmony.
If you've never considered God's wisdom,
Open your ears, they may help you to see.

"The crackling sound that your foot makes;
The mocking bird singing a tune,
The howl of the fox when the day is far past,
Baying a song at the moon.

"In the midst of all this there is quiet;
Not just the kind you can hear,
But the kind that sinks deep in the soul of a man.
You are closer to God than you were.

"Consider the filtering sunlight
Through the leaves of the trees just above.
If you open your heart it will tell you
That all this was created in love.

"You may drink from the stream; it's clear and it's pure.
It's cool, and the taste is so sweet.
God planned it that way. He knew you'd be here,
And your needs he was happy to meet.

"The air's cool and crisp, caressing you now,
And beckoning you to breathe deep.
If through all of these things God has spoken to you,
You may find it hard not to weep."

So I fell on my knees and gave praise to Him there,
"Lord, Thy ways are better than mine.
And when I return to the place man has built,
I'll remember this place, and I'll make my ways Thine."

Three is Not a Crowd
Author: Donna Word Chappell
You’ll soon be saying wedding vows;
Through life you’ll walk together,
To share the love that you have vowed
That naught but death can sever.

And what the future holds, you feel,
Together you will stand
Against all odds, storms, winds and tides,
As you walk hand in hand.

But, Dear ones, as your honeymoon
Will very soon begin,
I counsel you, don’t go alone,
But take along a friend.

Take a friend who’ll stand by you
Through love’s first stormy winds,
Take a friend who’ll comfort you,
Who’ll always be your friend.

Who’ll not take sides in arguments,
Who’ll never foster hate,
And who, no matter what the quarrel
Will always arbitrate.

Take a friend who’ll love you both,
Through poverty or wealth,
A friend whose friendship stronger grows
In trouble or ill health.

Take a friend with whom your plight
Will never be abhorred.
Just take Him, dear ones — take Him now.
Take Jesus Christ, my Lord.

Heaven Bound
Author: Donna Word Chappell
What? Can it be someday these eyes
will see the Savior's face?
These eyes that looked to sin will someday
on His countenance gaze?

Oh, toil-worn body, shalt thou bathe
in seas of heavenly rest?
And shalt thou without pain or sorrow lean
upon His breast?

Oh, aching head, a crown of glory
shalt thou one day wear?
A crown that fadeth not away,
though heaven and earth shall disappear?

And can it be these fingers that
are bent with labor strong
Will one day strike a harp's gold strings
in tune to God's new song?

Shall these tired feet that tread through dust
yet walk the streets of gold?
Yes, troubled soul, this hope God gives
to His elect to have and hold.

So be not earthbound, soul, but seek
with joy the heavenly fate,
And when you come to Jordan's banks,
gold chariots will await.

Beauty of the Rose
Author: Donna Word Chappell
One day as I was thinking on the things that are above,
I felt no heart could know the depth or breadth of Jesus' love.

I sought a time, a place to give these thoughts more meditation,
To think about the Savior, and the wonder of creation.

I wandered through the city with its asphalt, brick and tile,
But found no quiet place where one could meditate awhile.

The mountains seemed to beckon, "Come away, away from there.
Come out to the hillsides, where God's beauty you can share."

And so I left the city, left the turmoil, noise and strife,
And to the countryside I fled, as one who flees for life.

As I walked along the hillsides, I espied a wild, red rose.
This sudden glimpse of beauty almost set my heart aglow.

"The Rose of Sharon," thought I, "Is just such a thing as this,
A sudden glimpse of beauty in a world that’s gone amiss."

A lamb walked in the valley, spotless, pure, and white as snow.
I wanted to reach out and touch him in the vale below.

And then I thought of Jesus, Lamb of God who died that day.
My meditation lasted until day had passed away.

Then as the darkness gathered and the sun withheld its light,
My heart was bright as noonday, for the Lord was my delight.

And when the stars of evening glowed with brightness from afar,
I thought of my redeemer, Christ, the Bright and Morning Star.

I had no fear of harm there, whether sleeping or awake,
For I seemed to hear the promise, "I'll not leave you nor forsake."

The morning sun arose then, warmth and brightness to impart,
But it seemed pale against the Day Star rising in my heart.

I turned reluctantly, for I must needs be homeward bound,
I must go to the city, there to hear the man-made sounds.

And so I left the beauty of the fertile countryside,
And as I left I knew that I was filled with peace inside.

I thought how few there be who see the beauty of my Lord,
How few who take the time to seek out Christ, and his rewards;

Who seek the sparkling treasures this world offers, all aglow,
And like the city dwellers, miss the beauty of the Rose.

Don't Wait Until Tomorrow
Author: Donna Word Chappell
Do you long for the day my friend, when forever you will be
Side by side walking with your Lord in perfect harmony?
Do you long to sing His praise with angels from above?
To bask and rest in His embrace, surrounded by His love?
My precious friend, don't wait until tomorrow to be blessed.
Reach out and touch His heart today and find sweet peace and rest.
Lay hold on faith, rest in your King, Then watch your desert bloom.
His roses will grow in your life today and shed their sweet perfume.

Heart Cry

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Search me, Lord, come search my heart.
Come shine Thy light in every part.
Know me, Lord, then let me know
Myself that I may start to grow
Into the image of Thy Son,
Thy Lovely, Blessed, Holy One.
Purge me, Lord, that I may be
A vessel fit for use by Thee.
Send Thy refining fires today
To cleanse this vessel made of clay.
Unveil my eyes, Lord, let me see
The One who shed His blood for me.

Jesus My Beloved

Author: Donna Word Chappell
My Beloved is mine and I am His,
Oh, beautiful, wonderful thought!
How greatly He suffered that I might know bliss,
And by His own blood I am bought.

Oh, listen my soul, as he calleth to thee,
Gushing rivers of deepest delight.
Whatever befalls thee, let this be thy plea,
That thy Love be with thee in thy plight.

Take care, oh my soul, that thou seek not thine own,
But His lips only seek thou to find.
Know this, oh my soul, thou art never alone,
If thy heart with thy Love is entwined.

Thou art black, oh my soul, thou art spotted and stained,
Uncomely, ill-favored, undone.
“But thou hast been washed,” says my Love, unrestrained,
and thy beauty shines forth as the sun.

Behold, thou art fair,” says my Love unto me,
Thou art pleasant, unstained, undefiled.
Rise up, my fair one, for my heart longs for thee,
my beloved, my sister, my child.

Rejoice, oh my soul, and leap with delight,
Thou art His, mind and body and soul.
Let His love-chains bind thee, lean thou on His might,
through His love thou wilt be made whole.

Invitation to Rejoice

Author: Donna Word Chappell
While rivers of infinite bliss flow along, some walk in dry places below.
They're unable to hear the sweet victory song. They see only rain, wind, and snow.
"Be glad and rejoice" says the Lord, tenderly, "Reach up and take hold of my hand.
Let me carry your burdens; lean only on me. I will lift you up out of the sand.
Trust me, and I'll calm every storm in your life, change your journey to pleasure that lasts.
Receive of my love and my joy and my peace, and your sadness will be in the past."

The True Foundation

Author: Donna Word Chappell
Dost thou long for pleasure, things this world call precious?
Abundance of wealth, or a mansion that’s spacious?
Wouldst thou have stone structures all in thy possession,
Or is it thy vigor which is thine obsession?
Thou fool, dost thou not know that these things will pass,
These mansions, these structures are things that can’t last?
Thy vigor one day will be trembling hands.
Thy mansions, thy bulwarks are built on quicksand.
Lay hold on True Wealth I implore you today.
Build on the Foundation that will not pass away.
Reach out for thy Lord, thrust thy hand in His side,
Lay up treasures in Heaven where no thief resides.
Put on Christ thy redeemer who will fill all in all.
Who, when thou art feeble, will not let thee fall.
And who will be waiting on Death’s other side,
Where the things thou hast built will forever abide.
